Understanding SMP​

How many sessions will I need?

Most treatments at Studio SMP are completed over three sessions. Each appointment builds on the last, layering density, depth, and detail across the entire thinning or balding area until we reach your ideal result. This gradual approach ensures a natural finish and gives you the opportunity to make small adjustments as we go. Each session typically runs 1.5–2 hours.

Is SMP suitable for grey, blonde or red hair?

Yes absolutely. SMP works for all hair colours, especially when the hair is kept short. When shaved, everyone’s hair roots appear as a shade of grey, which is the “shadow” we match. I use carbon-based black pigments diluted to different strengths, from very light grey to darker tones, allowing perfect matching for all skin types and hair colours. No blonde or red pigment is used in SMP, these colours are not required for natural results.

Does SMP look natural in real life?

Yes, when done correctly. SMP replicates the look of real hair follicles, and the goal is always to create an undetectable, natural result. After many years in the industry and 1,000+ clients, natural realism is my specialty. Many clients tell me their friends simply think they’ve regrown their hair or had a transplant. But to be honest the majority of people simply won't notice a thing, which is a great sign the treatment looks natural! Will it look strange after the first session?

Not at all. The first session is always light (in terms of density and colour), and because it's the first layer, it can look a little 'dotty', but it still looks good and you can confidently go back to work the next day. In session two we'll create the density and definition, and session three completes the look, refining the hairline, blending perfectly with your existing hair, and building up to the final shade.

How long does SMP last?

SMP is a semi-permanent treatment. Because the pigment sits shallower in the skin than a traditional tattoo, it will slowly soften and fade over time. If you prefer a crisp, freshly-done look, I recommend touch-ups every 2–3 years. If you’re happy with a softer, more subtle appearance, touch-ups every 5–10 years are common. Touch-ups are significantly cheaper than your initial treatment and are also a great chance to update your style and make any amendments.

Who is SMP suitable for?

Does SMP make your hair grow?

No. SMP does not stimulate hair growth. It is a cosmetic solution that creates the appearance of fuller, denser hair by replicating follicles in the upper layers of the skin. It’s an excellent option for people who are not suitable for, or not interested in, hair transplant surgery.​

Hairline Design

​How is my hairline customised?

Your hairline is designed around your facial structure, age, and personal style. In your consultation, we map out several hairline options and use temporary outlining to show how they look on your face. Nothing is tattooed until you’re 100% happy. The goal is to enhance your natural features, not change them.

Can I choose between natural and sharp hairlines?

Absolutely. Some clients prefer a soft, natural, “barely there” look, while others want a more defined and sharper edge. We’ll go through examples so you can see the differences clearly. No matter which style you pick, I always tailor it so it complements your skin tone and blends seamlessly into your existing hair.

Healing & Aftercare

​What does the healing process look like?

Healing is simple and usually takes around 10 days.

• Days 1–3: slight redness and darker impressions

• Days 4–7: the colour begins to soften and settle

• Days 7–10: impressions blend naturally into the scalp.

Unlike a traditional tattoo, there's minimal scabbing, you just keep the area clean, dry, and avoid sweating while it heals.

When can I shave again?

Most clients can shave again 3–5 days after each session. The earlier you shave, the more important it is to use a gentle electric shaver rather than a razor. Razor shaving should wait until after the initial 7–10 day healing period.

What aftercare steps do I need to follow?

Aftercare is simple:

• Keep the scalp dry for the first 2 days

• Avoid heavy sweating, swimming, and sun exposure for 7 days

• No razors or exfoliation for at least 3-5 days

• Moisturise lightly from day 4 onwards (if needed)

• Avoid direct sun on the scalp for long periods

These steps help the pigment settle evenly and keep your SMP looking sharp long-term.

Safety & Risks

​How safe is scalp micropigmentation?

SMP is very safe when performed by an experienced artist. We use reputable, cosmetic-grade pigments and sterile, single-use needles. Adam holds a certificate in infection control, and the Studio holds a City of Gold Coast skin-penetration licence under Queensland's personal appearance services infection-control laws.

Will it turn blue or green over time?

No. I use premium, USA-made, carbon-based SMP pigments, completely free of iron oxide. These are designed specifically for scalp micropigmentation and will never shift blue or green. Over time the pigment naturally lightens along the grey scale, this is normal and expected.

Does scalp micropigmentation hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as mild, more of a discomfort than a pain. It's also not a lingering sensation, so as soon as the tattoo stops, the discomfort stops. It’s far gentler than traditional tattooing and entirely manageable. You can pause at any time. If we do a double session back-to-back, the second session can be more tender than the first. A small percentage patients who are pain sensitive prefer to use numbing cream and that's perfectly acceptable and won't affect treatment.

Can scalp micropigmentation be removed?

Yes. SMP naturally fades over time, but full removal requires laser tattoo removal (approx. 1-2 sessions). No Studio SMP clients have ever needed theirs removed, only the occasional refresh to keep their result fresh and precise.

Can SMP damage hair follicles?

No. SMP pigment is placed above the hair follicles and does not affect their growth. When performed correctly, it is completely safe for existing hair.

Pricing & Consultations

How much does SMP cost?

At Studio SMP Gold Coast, shaved-head SMP costs $3,000–$3,500 in total (not per session). Density treatments for longer hair are $2,000–$4,000, scar camouflage is $1,000–$2,000, and touch-ups are $600–$1,000. Split payments and Zip interest-free are available.

​Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, I offer flexible payment options to make SMP more accessible. You can pay per session or use a payment plan through Zip. Just ask during your consultation and I’ll walk you through the options.

​Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes, iIf you're not 100% happy with your healed result, we'll adjust it free of charge within 30-days of your final session. If you'd rather go back to being bald, we'll refund 100% of your treatment fee AND pay for your first laser removal session. No other clinic offers this type of guarantee, but that's how confident we are in the quality of our work. We've never had to refund a customer, but it's there for your peace of mind!​

​Is scalp micropigmentation better than a hair transplant?

It depends on your goals. SMP is ideal if you want a non-surgical, low-maintenance, affordable solution that offers instant visual impact. Hair transplants are surgical, require recovery time and rely on strong donor follicles. Many clients choose SMP because it’s predictable, much cheaper, very realistic and doesn’t involve surgery. SMP can also be combined with a hair transplant to add density.
